INSECTS
At present Republic of Karelia is a natural refugium maintaining a relatively high level of biodiversity, especially of wood insects, in Fennoscandia, while its fauna has preserved some elements either irrecoverably lost in other countries of Northern Europe or currently at the verge of extinction there. Recently however some negative tendencies have been recorded in the state of forest ecosystems. Uncontrolled fellings may considerably reduce the area of suitable biotopes for many species or even communities depending on certain habitats, thus breaking natural relationships existing in the nature. The role of insects in terrestrial ecosystems can hardly be paralleled by any other group of organisms, in view of their abundance and species diversity.
