Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a regional institution engaged in basic and applied research into biodiversity (BD), dynamics of natural communities and sustainable ways of utilizing natural resources.

It comprises Forest Research Institute, Institutes of Biology, Northern Water Problems, Geology, etc. The total number of researchers working for the centre is over 600.
